Kallisto was the daughter of king Lycanoas of Arkadia. She was also know as “kallisti” , meaning the most beautiful of all nymphs, and she gave a vow of eternal virginity to the virgin goddess Artemis, whom she always accompanied. Zeus transformed himself looking like Artemis iν order to seduce her. Through her affair with Zeus, she begat the great hero of Arcadia, Arcas, as well as Pan, who was half-human and half-goat. Αrtemis’ wrath transformed her into a bear. When Arcas became an adult, one day he went to the forest to hunt. He saw his transformed mother without recognizing her so he aimed at her with his bow and arrow. To prevent the killing, Zeus transformed him into a little bear so he recognized his mother. Because Zeus feared his wife’s Hera’s wrath, he sent both of them to the sky transforming them into constellations in order to protect them. Ever since Kallisto is the Ursa Major (Great Bear) and Arcas is the Ursa Minor (Little Bear).
